Central Asia Residence Options Compared
For a North American or European considering Central Asia, the first question is what will support the stay: an employer, a university, a qualifying relative, an approved professional category, or a documented investment. A short visa-free visit does not establish permission to work or settle.
The Central Asia guide compares selected routes in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Each linked pathway explains the documents and limits in more detail.
If you have a local job offer
| Country | Route | What the employer needs to support |
|---|---|---|
| Kazakhstan | C3 work visa | Required labor permission or a documented exemption, plus the immigration application |
| Kyrgyzstan | Unified Permit | Employer registration and approval for the combined work-visa and labor document |
| Tajikistan | M work visa | Invitation or petition, signed contract, and applicable work authorization |
| Turkmenistan | WP work visa | State Migration Service invitation and the employment authorization |
| Uzbekistan | Ordinary work visa | Confirmation of the right to work or an applicable exemption, with matching visa permission |
Ask the employer to explain the sequence and the actual approved dates. Tajikistan’s embassy guidance describes an initial work visa of up to three months, with an extension based on work authorization. Turkmenistan’s public instructions require the state-approved invitation but do not establish a universal one-year stay. Neither should be sold as an automatic long-term permit from an offer letter.
Remote work and technology programs have different entry tests
| Route | Main eligibility check | What the first approval gives |
|---|---|---|
| Kazakhstan Neo Nomad | Foreign remote work and more than USD $3,000 monthly income evidenced over six months | Up to one year; no local employment |
| Kazakhstan Digital Nomad IT Visa | IT-specialist basis and an official petition from Astana Hub or the authorized government body | B9-1 visa to pursue a separate permanent-residence application |
| Kyrgyzstan Digital Nomad status | One of 11 nationalities, a listed profession, USD $5,000 past-year income, and a separate USD $3,000 balance | Initial 60-day status; further application for one year |
| Uzbekistan ordinary IT specialist | Qualifying Uzbekistan IT employment, USD $30,000 prior-year IT income, and recommendation | IT Visa of up to three years, with the program’s work-permit exemption |
| Uzbekistan IT Park founder | Founder of an already registered IT Park resident company, with recommendation | IT Visa of up to three years, subject to continuing program conditions |
Kyrgyzstan’s nationality list includes the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany, but not Canada, France, Spain, or most other European countries. Its occupation list covers specified technology and digital-creative activities; an online job alone is insufficient. The one-year extension adds medical and local business-registration evidence. The annual renewal framework is not a ten-year visa issued at once.
Kazakhstan’s similarly named programs should be kept separate. Neo Nomad is foreign-income remote-work permission. B9-1 is an officially supported IT-specialist visa linked to a separate residence process. The current Digital Nomad Residency pilot operates in Astana and Almaty through December 31, 2026. Confirm a continuing or replacement procedure for later applications; that date is not an automatic expiry date for an already issued visa or residence permission.
Uzbekistan has additional IT Visa categories. The ordinary specialist’s USD $30,000 prior-income test should not be applied to every approved founder, investor, researcher, or other specialist category. Conversely, ordinary company registration does not establish IT Park founder eligibility.
Match the student visa to the course
University study routes include Kazakhstan C9, Kyrgyzstan S, Tajikistan O1, Turkmenistan study, and Uzbekistan A1. Each requires an accepted place and the relevant institutional or government support.
Kyrgyzstan’s current portal lists S visas of up to 90 days. A multi-year degree therefore needs a confirmed continuing-stay process. Turkmenistan needs a State Migration Service invitation, not only admission. Uzbekistan’s A1 is regular student status and remains temporary, despite an English heading that can suggest otherwise. None of these entries establishes an automatic, unrestricted graduate work visa.
Plan each family member’s permission
| Family situation | Pathway | Limit to check |
|---|---|---|
| Married to a Kazakhstani citizen living permanently there | Citizen-spouse C2 | Recognized marriage of at least one year, plus support, housing, and insurance |
| Joining a qualifying foreign worker in Kazakhstan | C3 family visa | Recognized relationship and worker-supported application; no automatic transfer of work authorization |
| Joining a qualifying foreign resident in Kyrgyzstan | FF family visa | Standard term up to 90 days and no employment or profit-making activity; investor families have a validity exception |
| Joining a qualifying foreign worker in Tajikistan | M family visa | Separate family application and independent work authorization for employment |
A family's permission may depend on the principal keeping the job, course, or other approved status. Ask what happens if that basis ends and whether the second adult needs a separate route for work.
Investment visas require a qualifying contribution
Kyrgyzstan’s investment visa uses KGS 10,000,000 for up to five years or KGS 20,000,000 for up to ten, with evidence of investment in the specified economic activities. Uzbekistan’s INV visa uses at least 8,500 statutory base calculation units and provides a three-year visa. The current official unit value must be checked before calculating a currency equivalent.
These are visas with conditions. Neither is a grant of citizenship or permanent residence, and an ordinary home purchase should not be assumed to qualify. Uzbekistan’s INV category is also separate from IT Visa investment and other announced residence initiatives.
